Children & Adolescents
As a mother of three with 20 years experience of working within the social sector, I've experienced time and again how a young person can thrive when given a voice.
I've found that counselling can help a child or teenager to learn who they are and what is right for them. It can empower them to examine, challenge and change their world. It can enable them to gain the skills they need to succeed socially.
As no two people are the same, I tailor my approach to suit each individual.
What is Child and Adolescent Counselling?
Counselling can help a child or adolescent explore concerns and problems in their social, emotional or cognitive development. It gives them the opportunity to express difficult or confused feelings in a safe environment with clear boundaries.
How does counselling for young people differ from adult counselling?
The basic principles are the same: my counselling practice, whether working with children, teenagers or adults, is based on the person-centred model into which I integrate other models. This means that when I work with an individual, I listen without making judgements, I respect them and I create a safe space where they decide what we talk about and choose the direction the sessions take.
As a counsellor it is my role to be gentle, supportive and at times challenging whilst making my clients feel listened to and valued.
For the child or teenager who sometimes prefers to work with more activity and fewer words, I encourage creative therapy. We may use art materials, games, toys, clay or music but there are lots of other ways to work too.
"All our staff have knowledge of mental health and emotional well-being but it is lovely to be able to call upon Rachel, as a fully trained counsellor, when there are issues beyond that which our staff can manage" - Stephen, Headteacher
Sometimes its hard for young people to put into words their feelings, emotions, behaviour or experiences. They may feel unsure or worried about where to start but this is normal: counselling is about working together in whichever way suits the individual.
Working in this non-directive way allows the young person the freedom to express themselves physically, verbally or creatively. Whatever their age, my clients and I are working together towards the same goal.
